Gideon van Riet

Gideon van Riet is a senior lecturer in political studies at the North-West University in South Africa. He is a recipient of an SSRC-APN Individual Research Fellowship (2019). Gideon is interested in critical security studies’ theoretical evolution and contemporary debates within the field. Empirically, his research has thus far been in disaster studies and problem of crime, specifically the response thereto beyond the state. Along with various journal articles and book chapters, he has published two monographs: Hegemony, security infrastructures and the politics of crime: Everyday experiences in South Africa (London: Routledge, 2021) and the Institutionalisation of disaster risk reduction: South Africa and neoliberal governmentality (London: Routledge, 2017).
