Lilian Namuma S. Kong’ani

Lilian Namuma S. Kong’ani is a Tutorial Fellow at Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies, University of Nairobi. She holds a PhD in Environmental Governance and Management and an MSc. in Environmental Governance both from the University of Nairobi (UoN), and a Bachelor of Environmental Studies (Community Development) from Kenyatta University. She is a recipient of the2022 African Peacebuilding Network Individual Research Fellowship award, a mediator, researcher, and alumna of the Mawazo Learning Exchange Programme Fellowship, Mawazo Institute. She has published in peer-reviewed journals and participated in several local and international conferences, including the 2019 International Student Conference on Environment and Sustainability (ISCE) at Tongji University and UN Environment, Shanghai, China. She is interested and passionate about natural resources governance and management, climate change, community development, conflict resolution, peacebuilding, gender mainstreaming, environmental impact assessment, sustainable development and humanitarian work among others. She was awarded inter alia, the German Academic Service (DAAD) Postdoctoral Researcher’s Climate Change Networking Tour 2022, the Mawazo Institute Fellows Fund, and the UoN@50 Achievers’ award for her contribution towards the establishment of the Wangari Maathai Institute for Peace and Environmental Studies (WMI), and a special recognition for her exemplary service to the college. Kong’ani previously worked as an Administrative Assistant, WMI, where she participated in the coordination and implementation of various projects including the STAKE (Stabilizing Kenya through Resolving Forest Related Conflicts) and wPOWER (Promoting the critical role of women in climate change), among others. Kong’ani also served as an intern at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Community Services Unit. She serves on numerous committees at the UoN. Kong’ani believes in taking up new challenges and contributing towards solutions to local and global development and environmental issues for inter and intra-generational equity.
